Staff Nurse, Coronary Care

I am from Kerala, in southern India, and before I came to Aberdeen I worked in Oman. An agency found me a job in the UK at a major hospital in Aberdeen and I remember looking up the internet to find out more about the people and the climate of the city.

Once I arrived, I was made very welcome indeed. Everyone, especially the Head of Recruitment, was very helpful in making sure I was settled in well. It was also a pleasant surprise to see just how good the facilities are, and how professional the other staff are too, especially compared to my experiences working elsewhere. Everything here is definitely more advanced including the higher standard of care given to patients. For example, in Coronary Care if something goes wrong, we have all the equipment we need to revive the patient, and the doctors and staff are on site to deal with them right away.

Furthermore, the training I’ve received is excellent and there are always opportunities to study and improve one’s self. If you are hard working and enthusiastic then you can get on well in your career.

The people in the city are also welcoming. I was surprised at how good the shops are: particularly how easily available spices were. I’ve been to other cities in Scotland, usually on NHS business, but I enjoy coming back to Aberdeen as it’s a nice place to live and work. I manage to get back to India once a year but I’ve been here happily for nearly five years now and see myself here for the foreseeable future. It’s a better job than I’ve had before, with a better salary, better education for my children and, as I said, really good colleagues and facilities.
