Louise McNamara

Administrator, DOME (Department of Medicine for the Elderly), Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen

I’ve been here, working for NHS Grampian for nearly 15 years. Initially, I began my career here in catering but quickly changed and I became an auxiliary nurse, which I then did for many years, before moving to my present job about 3 years ago.

My current job involves – a lot!! I’m responsible for all the administration concerned with medical staff rotation - the intake of trainee doctors and all their annual leave, their study leave, their expenses, organising all the catering for their meetings for DOME, etc etc. I also organise everything to do with teaching sessions for 2nd, 4th and 5th year students.

I really enjoy the variety and the fact that I’m doing different things all day, everyday. The people I work with are wonderful – we work very well as a team and they are very supportive.

Having worked for NHS Grampian for 15 years means I’ve a good idea of what it’s like. I think they are very fair people to work for, and the management is very supportive. After school I worked in the oil industry, so I know this is not always the case outside the NHS. In fact, I’d go as far to say that the management are absolutely fantastic, very, very good - I’ve no complaints at all.

Would I recommend working with the NHS? Well, they are fantastic employers, very fair, and you get plenty of annual leave. I’d say to anyone nowadays, come and work for the NHS Grampian, you’ll not regret it – I certainly haven’t.
