Housing

In an area of contrasting towns and landscapes there is, naturally, a wide range of housing available to suit all lifestyles and budgets.

Accommodation is available in the private and public sectors and there is a good range of rented property for those who would prefer not to buy. In the current economic situation, with house prices falling considerably, it is worthwhile noting that the Scottish market has generally bucked the UK trend and Aberdeen and Grampian in particular have not been affected to the extent of the rest of the country Scotsman (2009).

Aberdeen, as the region’s principal city, has flats and townhouses, modern housing estates and magnificent older properties, many built in the sparkling local stone that gives Aberdeen its other name – The Granite City. Housing in the rural towns, whether inland or around the coastal fringe, is equally varied, but whether you prefer town or country, we can guarantee there will be something to your taste.

Rented Housing
The oil industry has encouraged a thriving rented sector and private landlords tend to offer fully furnished properties. In Aberdeen you will be able to rent most types of property, ranging from one bedroom flats to mansion houses. To give you an idea of prices, one bedroom flats are typically available from £400 - £600 per month. Normally, a deposit and one month’s rent in advance are required. You can get more information on private rented property throughout Grampian from Aberdeen Solicitors Property Centre. Alternatively, see the local press (and the links on the 'working with us' page) or by contacting one of the many letting agents.

Rented accommodation is also available from local Housing Associations. These properties are generally unfurnished and are usually charged at a lower monthly rate than private lets. There is usually a waiting list for the majority of these properties but you can find out more about the Housing Associations in Aberdeen by contacting: Homechoice

Private Housing
Aberdeen Solicitors’ Property Centre provides the best source of private housing. ASPC publishes a weekly (Thursday) newspaper with details of all houses on its members’ books. Perhaps a quicker way to browse the available properties is to go to their website: www.aspc.co.uk

You may also find www.upmystreet.com of use in looking for information about housing and house prices in Grampian.

Please remember if you are moving to the area from elsewhere in the UK that Scotland’s system of buying and selling houses is different from in England and Wales. Many people believe that our system is simpler and better. Essentially, the basic difference is that once an offer has been accepted for a house sale it is legally binding. Please make sure you take appropriate legal advice.
